A popular businessman who relocated from his community to escape rising insecurity has been abducted in the very town he fled to for safety, underscoring the pervasive and relentless nature of banditry gripping Kaduna State. Alhaji Sabitu Mai Katifu, a well-known foam merchant in Makarfi Local Government Area, was seized by armed men on Monday afternoon, June 22, 2026, just two months after he moved from Chediya community to Makarfi town in search of peace.

According to a source close to Makarfi town, the businessman had repeatedly expressed fears that some people were after him, a concern that prompted his relocation. However, the gunmen still tracked him down to his new location and abducted him in broad daylight. As of the time of this report, the abductors have yet to establish contact with his family members, leaving relatives and loved ones in agonising uncertainty.

The Kaduna State Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are underway to secure the victim’s release. A police source told journalists that operatives have been deployed to the area and are actively working to track down the kidnappers and rescue Alhaji Sabitu.

The abduction is the latest in a series of attacks that have turned Makarfi and surrounding local government areas into a theatre of fear. Residents have grown increasingly anxious as bandits continue to kidnap for ransom, raid communities, and kill with impunity. The Northern region, particularly the North‑West, has been under the grip of bandits and terrorists who unleash mayhem on communities, displacing thousands and shattering livelihoods.

Alhaji Sabitu’s ordeal serves as a grim reminder that for many Nigerians, there is no safe haven. Even those who flee are not spared. The question on the lips of many residents is no longer just about how to survive, but where to run to.
