A wave of violence swept through the quiet Rumuodogo 2 Community in the Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State in the early hours of Monday, 6 July 2026, as heavily armed gunmen stormed the area on motorcycles, killing two residents and leaving the community in a state of panic and fear. The attack, which occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m., saw the assailants break into homes in a commando-style operation, systematically searching for their targets before executing them. The motive for the attack is believed to be a retaliatory action linked to a previous communal conflict.

According to harrowing accounts from survivors, the gunmen arrived on a fleet of motorcycles, moving swiftly through the unlit village streets with what appeared to be pre-determined precision. They breached selected residences, kicking down doors and dragging families outside to isolate their targets. One survivor, identified only as Monica, gave a tearful account of the terrifying ordeal she and her husband endured. She told reporters that the attackers invaded their home at about 1 a.m., broke down their door, and forced her and her husband outside.

“They came by 1 a.m., broke our door and brought my husband and me outside. I was even naked when we were brought outside,” Monica narrated, her voice trembling with emotion. “They started beating my husband and shot him. They wanted to kill me too, but one of them said they should leave me because I am a woman”. Monica alleged that the assailants came from a neighbouring community in another local government area that shares a border with Rumuodogo 2. She further revealed that the attackers accused residents of her community of being responsible for the killing of several individuals whose bodies were discovered in a river the previous Monday.

The attack shattered the serenity of the community, sending residents into a desperate scramble for safety, with some fleeing into nearby bushes to escape the assault. The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the incident and launched a full-scale investigation. The spokesperson for the command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Blessing Kaborlo Agabe, confirmed that two people lost their lives in the attack. “I can confirm the incident. Two persons were killed in the attack. Investigation is ongoing to ascertain the motive behind the attack and to arrest the perpetrators,” Agabe stated. Police forensic teams have visited the crime scenes to recover evidence, including ballistics and spent cartridges.

In response to the deadly breach, the police have reinforced the area with joint patrol teams. Meanwhile, local vigilante groups and the Emohua Security Planning Committee have raised their threat alert levels, advising residents of the riverine borderlands to restrict late-night movements and establish immediate communication lines with the nearest divisional police headquarters. The incident has heightened tensions in the area, underscoring the fragile security situation in rural Rivers State, where communal disputes often escalate into deadly reprisal attacks. As the manhunt for the perpetrators continues, the community of Rumuodogo 2 is left to mourn its dead while living in fear of further violence.
