The Edo State Security Squad (ESSS) has directed all business owners across the state to install functional Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at their premises on or before July 30, 2026, warning that enforcement would begin immediately after the deadline. The directive, announced on Monday, 6 July 2026, by the squad's spokesperson, Noah Idemudia, is part of a broader effort to strengthen surveillance, tackle crime, and enhance the capacity of security agencies to investigate criminal activities across the state.
Addressing journalists in Benin City, Idemudia explained that CCTV footage would provide investigators with crucial evidence needed to unravel criminal activities, identify suspects, and secure prosecutions. "Business owners are encouraged to install effective, working cameras within their business premises. We appeal to the general public and the business community to comply for everyone's safety," he said. He added that with the cameras, security agencies can "piece security breach incidences together as professionals" and urged compliance to "make Edo a safe place".
The spokesperson also issued a stern warning to business owners who fail to comply with the directive. While the exact penalties were not specified, Idemudia made it clear that the government would not hesitate to enforce the order. "The Governor has given a deadline that by August 1, all business owners must have CCTV cameras installed. We will go round to enforce compliance," he said, reiterating that the move would "go a long way in helping us tackle crime and criminality".
The CCTV mandate is one of several security measures being implemented by the Edo State Government under Governor Monday Okpebholo's administration. The government has also intensified its crackdown on cultism and kidnapping, with the security squad recently arresting two suspects in Auchi and Uromi for alleged cultism and unlawful possession of firearms. The suspects are expected to be arraigned before a mobile court established to fast-track the prosecution of cultists and kidnappers.
In a related development, the Edo State Security Squad warned cult groups against holding the annual "7/7" celebrations, traditionally observed by the Black Axe confraternity. Idemudia cautioned that anyone caught participating in the celebrations would be arrested and prosecuted. "You cannot carry out such acts in Benin City. Even if you go outside Benin, you will still be apprehended," he warned. He also reiterated the need to profile community leaders in collaboration with the Oba of Benin Palace, warning impostors to desist from parading themselves as recognised leaders.
As the July 30 deadline approaches, business owners across Edo State are expected to comply with the directive or face enforcement action. The government has urged the business community to support its security efforts, emphasising that the installation of CCTV cameras would significantly improve public safety and strengthen the state's crime-fighting capabilities.
