The Benue State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Abdullahi Usman, in connection with the brutal killing of a university professor and his younger brother at their residence in Makurdi. The suspect, an indigene of Awe Local Government Area in neighbouring Nasarawa State, was taken into custody on Thursday, 9 July 2026, as investigators intensified efforts to track down other members of the gang responsible for the attack.
The Command's Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Thursday and made available to journalists in Makurdi. According to the police, officers attached to the 'D' Division responded to a distress call from the Adaka axis of Makurdi Local Government Area, where they discovered the lifeless bodies of two brothers. The victims were identified as Professor Gabriel Saawua Nyityo, 58, a lecturer in the Department of History at the Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, formerly known as Benue State University, and his younger brother, Iorngee John Nyityo, 19. Both men were killed by unidentified gunmen who invaded their residence in the early hours of Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
The police spokesperson disclosed that preliminary investigations led to the arrest of Abdullahi Usman, 23, who hails from Awe Local Government Area in Nasarawa State, for his alleged involvement in the crime. DSP Edet stated that investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
Professor Nyityo was a respected historian and academic at the Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi. His death, coming alongside that of his teenage brother, has sent shockwaves through the Adaka community and the wider university community. Although lecturers at the state university are currently on strike, the killing of the History Department lecturer has drawn widespread condemnation. The police have assured the public that efforts are being intensified to apprehend other members of the criminal gang.
