The Niger State Police Command has recovered a vehicle allegedly stolen in Lapai Local Government Area and arrested two suspects in possession of toy guns and expired ATM cards, in separate operations that have dealt a blow to criminal networks operating across the state. The command's Police Public Relations Officer confirmed the breakthroughs in a statement issued on July 21, 2026, confirming that the arrests were made in connection with offences ranging from vehicle theft and robbery to the possession of illegal items.
In a significant operation, a police surveillance patrol team attached to the Tudun-Wada Division arrested two suspects on July 14, 2026, at about 11:00 p.m. along the M.I. Wushishi Estate Junction in Minna. The suspects, identified as Zaradeen Sani, 19, of Bosso, and Yakubu Abdullahi, 20, of Maitumbi, were intercepted while riding in a tricycle. A search conducted on them led to the recovery of three plastic toy pistols and 16 expired ATM cards belonging to different banks. During interrogation, the suspects claimed they found the ATM cards while scavenging in Lagos. However, police investigators suspect they had been using the toy guns to rob unsuspecting residents around the M.I. Wushishi Estate axis.
In a separate operation, police operatives attached to the Lapai Police Division took over two suspected car thieves from the Kano State Police Command after they allegedly confessed to stealing a Volkswagen vehicle in Lapai, Niger State. The suspects, identified as Dauda Saidu, 23, of Dindare village in Tofa area of Kaduna State, and Hassan Aliyu, 28, of Faki, Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State, were arrested in Kano State following credible intelligence received on July 7, 2026. The suspects reportedly confessed during interrogation that the vehicle they had been using to carry out criminal activities was stolen in Lapai, Niger State. They further admitted that about six months ago, they conspired to steal a Volkswagen vehicle with registration number WDL 765 ZY at Maraban-Gulu, near Lapai. The vehicle was taken to Kaduna State, where it had since been used for commercial transportation between Kaduna and Kano states, as well as for other alleged criminal activities.
The stolen Volkswagen has since been recovered, while efforts are ongoing to trace its rightful owner. Both cases are under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department. The Niger State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to combating crime and urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance public safety across the state.
