The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has established a Reconciliation Committee to address grievances arising from its recently concluded primary elections and strengthen unity among party members ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party leadership announced the move in Akure, Ondo State, as it moved to calm concerns over disagreements among some aspirants and supporters following the outcome of the internal electoral process. The APC, however, dismissed claims that the party was divided, describing the disagreements as normal political differences that could be resolved through dialogue.
Ondo APC State Chairman, Mr Babatunde Kolawole, disclosed the formation of the committee during a visit to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure. He said the decision followed consultations with party leaders and stakeholders across the state.
Kolawole named the Chairman of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Prince Biyi Poroye, as the head of the reconciliation panel. He added that the committee would work with experienced party leaders and stakeholders to resolve complaints and rebuild confidence among members.
The APC chairman explained that political activities, including congresses, conventions, by-elections and legislative primaries, often produce disagreements among members, but maintained that such issues were not unusual within democratic organisations.
“There is no way we will go through political activities without issues,” Kolawole said, stressing that the party had internal structures capable of managing disagreements and preventing them from escalating into crises.
The reconciliation effort comes after the conclusion of the party’s nomination processes for various elective positions, which reportedly generated complaints from some unsuccessful aspirants. The leadership said the next phase was to bring all stakeholders together and ensure that internal disagreements did not affect the party’s preparations for future elections.
Addressing concerns over criticisms from some aspirants, including former Commissioner for Energy, Razaq Obe, Kolawole said individuals had the right to express their personal opinions but insisted that such views should not be interpreted as the official position of the APC leadership.
He described the disagreements as individual expressions rather than evidence of a major crisis within the party, adding that the reconciliation committee was created to listen to grievances and encourage unity.
The APC leadership also rejected suggestions that the absence of a strong opposition challenge in Ondo State could negatively affect democracy, arguing that the party’s dominance was linked to what it described as the achievements of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
The party disclosed that it had recorded the activities of about 84 support groups across Ondo State and planned to integrate them into its structure as part of mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 elections. The leadership also stated its ambition to secure a significant number of votes for President Tinubu in the next presidential election.
The reconciliation move follows broader efforts by APC leaders in Ondo State to maintain unity after internal contests. Earlier in July 2026, party elders under the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) began reconciliation efforts aimed at resolving post-primary disagreements and strengthening cooperation among stakeholders.
Chairman of the Ondo APC Governor’s Advisory Council, Pius Akinyelure, had described political disagreements as common in democratic processes and emphasised the importance of dialogue, sacrifice and mutual respect among party members.
Political analysts say reconciliation efforts by major parties are often crucial after primary elections, as defeated aspirants and their supporters can influence the strength of a party’s campaign structure during general elections.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the Ondo APC leadership said it would continue engaging members across the state to maintain cohesion and present a united front.
The newly established committee is expected to begin consultations with aggrieved members and other stakeholders as part of efforts to prevent internal disputes from affecting the party’s electoral plans.
