Abia State Governor, Alex Chioma Otti, has filed a ₦5 billion defamation lawsuit against the Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Uche Aguoru, over alleged statements accusing the governor of corruption, misappropriation of public funds and interference in political affairs.
The suit was filed before the High Court of Abia State sitting in Umuahia, where Governor Otti is seeking legal redress over claims he says have damaged his reputation and public standing.
According to reports surrounding the legal action, the governor is challenging publications allegedly made by Aguoru in which accusations were raised concerning the management of public resources under the Otti administration. The governor is demanding that the APC spokesman provide evidence to support the claims or face legal consequences.
The development has added a new dimension to political disagreements between the ruling Labour Party government in Abia State and opposition parties, particularly the APC, as political actors continue to debate the performance, policies and accountability of the state administration.
Governor Otti, who assumed office on May 29, 2023, after winning the Abia governorship election, has consistently presented his administration as focused on transparency, institutional reforms and improving public service delivery.
