African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has issued a stark warning to Nigeria, declaring that the country must urgently embrace the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution or risk being permanently left behind in a rapidly transforming global economy. In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, July 26, 2026, Sowore argued that Nigeria's failure to capitalise on previous industrial revolutions had left the nation technologically dependent on innovations developed elsewhere, and that the current wave of technological advancement presents a final opportunity to reposition the country's economy and accelerate development.
Sowore traced Nigeria's technological marginalisation to decades of poor leadership, weak governance, and inadequate investment in education, innovation and human capital development. "Nigeria missed the opportunities presented by the first three industrial revolutions, largely due to decades of poor leadership, poor governance, and a failure to invest in innovation, education, and technological development," his statement read. "As a result, our nation has remained largely dependent on consuming technologies developed elsewhere instead of creating them." The Fourth Industrial Revolution, he noted, is redefining the future through artificial intelligence, robotics, blockchain, biotechnology, quantum computing and cyber-physical systems, and Nigeria cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of the past.
The activist and former presidential candidate has long advocated for governance reforms, youth empowerment and greater investment in education, science and technology, arguing that these sectors are critical to Nigeria's long-term economic growth and sustainable development. In his latest statement, he stressed that achieving technological transformation requires replacing "incompetence, corruption, and recycled politics with visionary leadership that prioritises science, technology, innovation, and human capital development." He warned that the country risks falling further behind if it fails to seize the opportunities offered by the ongoing revolution. "Nigeria cannot afford to miss this revolution. Our future depends on embracing it," he concluded.
Sowore's call for technological transformation is not merely aspirational. He has unveiled concrete proposals for integrating emerging technologies into governance if elected president in 2027. In separate posts shared on his verified X handle on Friday, July 24, he proposed appointing Artificial Intelligence as "Minister of Finance" and a "Drone" as Minister of Defence. According to Sowore, AI would eliminate human manipulation, waste and corruption in public finance by making data-driven, transparent decisions, while drone technology would redefine national security through modern surveillance, rapid response, precision and accountability. "The future of governance is technology, not patronage," he wrote.
Expanding on the proposal, Sowore argued that blockchain technology and artificial intelligence would form the backbone of his anti-corruption strategy, claiming that both technologies could significantly improve accountability in government. He explained that blockchain would create an immutable public ledger where every government transaction, contract, budget allocation and expenditure is permanently recorded, time-stamped and open to public scrutiny, while AI would continuously monitor government operations in real time to detect fraud, flag suspicious transactions, identify conflicts of interest, uncover procurement irregularities and expose corruption before public funds disappear. "Blockchain Technology and Artificial Intelligence are the most powerful weapons against public sector corruption," he said.
Sowore said the combined deployment of the two technologies would make corruption "technologically difficult, easily detectable, and swiftly punishable." He added that integrating AI into public finance management would also reduce the size of government bureaucracy and improve efficiency. "With AI as 'Minister of Finance,' we will no longer need bloated bureaucracies, endless convoys, handwritten receipts, paper ledgers that can be altered, or wasteful seminars that increase overhead, slow decision-making, and fuel systemic corruption," he wrote. "The government will become leaner, faster, transparent, and accountable. Our goal is not bureaucracy; it is to rapidly improve Nigerians' quality of life through technology-driven governance."
Sowore's proposal to appoint AI and drone technology as ministers has drawn both attention and scepticism, but his underlying message is clear: Nigeria's future depends on embracing technological transformation. Having consistently promoted digital governance, institutional reforms and technology-driven transparency as central pillars of his #Sowore2027 campaign, he argues that the country cannot afford to remain a consumer of foreign technologies when it has the potential to become a creator and innovator.
