An intelligence-led security operation in Katsina State has resulted in the death of a notorious bandit kingpin, Idi Abasu Aiki, and more than 60 other suspected fighters, dealing a significant blow to criminal networks operating across the North-West region. The operation, carried out by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) with support from the Katsina State Community Watch Corps, vigilantes, and specially trained hunters, successfully ambushed a heavily armed group of over 200 bandits who were mobilising for a reprisal attack on communities accused of collaborating with local security forces. The confrontation, which took place in Bakori Local Government Area on Saturday, July 31, 2026, resulted in the deaths of Aiki, 14 of his senior commanders, and more than 60 other suspected bandits, according to multiple security sources cited by Zagazola Makama and other news outlets.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the operation was launched after intelligence indicated that Aiki, reinforced by fighters linked to the notorious Ado Aleru gang in neighbouring Zamfara State, had moved into Guga village in Bakori LGA to carry out a planned assault. The attack was believed to be in retaliation for an earlier confrontation in Dawan Laila village, where local hunters had inflicted significant casualties on the bandits. The attackers intended to weaken the community defence groups before moving against surrounding settlements. However, unknown to the bandits, the DSS had obtained detailed intelligence about their plans and prepared a carefully coordinated ambush. A security source told Zagazola Makama: "Unknown to the bandits, the DSS had water-tight intelligence plans. The over 200 armed bandits literally walked into a trap. Over 60 of them, including Idi Abasu Aiki and 14 of their top commanders, didn't come out of that trap alive".
Aiki, long regarded as one of the most feared bandit leaders operating across Katsina and neighbouring Zamfara states, was suspected of orchestrating numerous deadly attacks, kidnappings, and raids across the region. He was believed to be the younger brother of the notorious bandit leader Ado Aliero. His elimination marks one of the most significant blows against armed criminal gangs operating in the North-West in recent months.
Despite the success of the operation, the clash came at a cost. Four members of the Katsina State Community Vigilantes and local hunters who participated in the raid lost their lives during the exchange of gunfire. The identities of the deceased had not been disclosed as of the time of filing this report. Security personnel later conducted clearance operations in the area, recovering weapons, ammunition, and other items abandoned by the fleeing bandits. Security operatives were also said to be searching nearby forests and surrounding communities for surviving members of the group.
The successful ambush underscores the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations in degrading terrorist and bandit networks across the North-West. The operation, which denied the bandits the opportunity to carry out their planned reprisal attack, is being seen as a major victory in the ongoing campaign to restore peace and security to communities that have long suffered under the shadow of banditry. For the people of Guga and surrounding villages, the elimination of Idi Abasu Aiki and his commanders offers a glimmer of hope that the tide may finally be turning against the criminal networks that have terrorised the region for years. However, the loss of four vigilantes serves as a stark reminder of the heavy price paid by those on the frontlines of the battle against insecurity, and the urgent need for sustained support for community-based security structures that have become increasingly vital to the defence of rural communities. Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the operation, but sources say investigations and follow-up clearance missions are continuing in the area to track down fleeing bandits and recover additional arms and ammunition.
