A Johannesburg attorney has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his girlfriend, whose charred remains were found inside her burnt-out Mercedes-Benz in an attempt to destroy evidence and conceal the crime. The South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg sentenced Thubelihle Sbonakaliso Mpisi on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, after convicting him of the murder of Mahlako Malebo Rabalao, as well as malicious injury to property and defeating the administration of justice. The case has drawn widespread attention, not only for the brutality of the crime but also for Mpisi's calculated deception in the weeks following the killing, during which he publicly mourned his victim on social media while hiding his role in her death.
Rabalao, a 26-year-old IT specialist, was just days away from her 27th birthday when she was killed in March 2023. Her charred remains were discovered inside her Mercedes-Benz on March 9, 2023, near her home in Midrand, a suburb of Johannesburg. The couple had been in an intimate relationship and shared a three-year-old son together. However, court evidence revealed that the relationship was under serious strain, as Rabalao had confided in relatives and friends that she intended to end the relationship and move out of the apartment they shared. She never got the chance.
During the trial, Senior State Advocate Michelle Bayat argued that although medical experts were unable to determine the exact cause of death because of the extensive burning of the body, the evidence established beyond reasonable doubt that Rabalao had died before the fire was started. The court accepted the State's case, which was built on circumstantial evidence, including cellphone records, forensic findings, expert testimony, and Mpisi's conduct before and after the incident. Prosecutors successfully argued that Mpisi murdered Rabalao before setting her body and vehicle alight in an attempt to destroy evidence and cover his tracks. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed that the extensive burning made it impossible for medical experts to pinpoint an exact cause of death, but the circumstantial evidence overwhelmingly proved that Rabalao had already died before the fire broke out.
Mpisi, who was 30 years old at the time of the crime, evaded authorities for four months before being arrested in KwaZulu-Natal. He remained in custody from July 28, 2023, after abandoning his bail application. The court's life sentence brings a measure of closure to a case that gripped South Africa and drew widespread attention to the dangers faced by women in relationships. The case also exposed a chilling pattern of deception: in the weeks following Rabalao's death, Mpisi took to Facebook to publicly mourn her, portraying himself as a grieving partner. "Rest in peace, my love. The pain I'm in is so deep. I don't know where to begin to start picking up the pieces. How do I raise Beanie ungekho?… I thank God for giving me the time we've shared together; nothing can ever take that away," he wrote on March 23, 2023. He added: "To all those who have given comfort, it is appreciated, and also to all who have given their continuous support in all ways in this dark moment. Your prayers, visits, company, financial and psychological support is highly appreciated."
The conviction has been welcomed by many South Africans, with advocates describing it as a significant step towards justice in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide. The case also highlights the growing use of digital footprints—cellphone records, social media posts, and online behaviour—in building criminal cases. Mpisi's social media posts, intended to project innocence, ultimately became part of the circumstantial evidence that helped secure his conviction. His life sentence ensures that the mother of his three-year-old son will receive the justice she was denied, and that a man who attempted to burn away the evidence of his crime will now spend the rest of his life behind bars.
