A United States-based lobbying firm has launched a campaign to prevent any proposed meeting between President Bola Tinubu and United States President Donald Trump during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, accusing the Nigerian leader's associates of attempting to use such an encounter to whitewash longstanding drug trafficking allegations. Von Batten-Montague-York L.C., a Washington-based lobbying outfit, announced its opposition in a post on its official X account on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, reacting directly to comments made by Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim.
The lobbying firm's intervention came weeks after Ibrahim, during a television interview, suggested that President Tinubu was expected to hold talks with President Trump on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, scheduled for September 2026. While Ibrahim stopped short of confirming a formal bilateral meeting, he revealed that Tinubu would be seated "very, very close" to Trump in the front row of the General Assembly hall, fuelling speculation about a potential encounter between the two leaders. Von Batten-Montague-York, however, has moved swiftly to counter any such plans, describing the remarks as an attempt to project American support for Tinubu despite the decades-old drug trafficking allegations that have trailed the former Lagos State governor.
In its statement on X, the firm revealed that it had already forwarded a video of Ibrahim's interview to senior officials within the Trump administration and plans to share it with members of the United States Congress and the State Department in the coming days. "President Tinubu and his associates are attempting to convince Nigerians and the world that President Trump condones the drug trafficking allegations against Tinubu," the firm alleged. It insisted that Trump "does not tolerate drug trafficking" and said it would continue briefing the White House on what it described as developments surrounding the allegations.
