A 15-year-old boy, Isah Muhammad, has lost his life after drowning in a pond popularly known as Sterling Pond along Disina Road in Dutse, Jigawa State, in a tragic incident that has renewed concerns over the dangers posed by water-filled ponds during the rainy season. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Jigawa State Command, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, stating that the drowning occurred on Tuesday, August 4, at approximately 4:30 p.m.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Jigawa State Command, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, the command received a distress call concerning the drowning of the teenager. Personnel from the Takur Site Division were immediately mobilised to the scene and evacuated the victim from the pond, rushing him to the General Hospital in Dutse for medical attention. However, a medical doctor at the hospital examined the boy and confirmed that he had died before or upon arrival at the facility. The victim, a resident of Bokoto Quarters in Dutse, was reportedly swimming in the pond when the incident occurred.
Following the confirmation of his death, the remains of the deceased were released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites. The Jigawa State Commandant of the NSCDC, Commandant Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, expressed condolences to the family, describing the loss as heartbreaking and praying for Allah to grant the boy eternal rest and give his family the strength to endure the difficult time.
The incident has sparked concern among residents of Bokoto Quarters and neighbouring communities, who frequent the pond. One resident, Abdullahi Sani, described the drowning as worrisome, noting that the increased volume of water in the pond during the rainy season could make it more dangerous, particularly for children and young people. Another resident, Musa Nalayi, urged parents to exercise greater caution, stating that the tragedy should serve as a warning about the dangers of approaching deep ponds during the rainy period. The NSCDC has urged residents to exercise greater caution around ponds and other potentially dangerous water bodies, particularly during the rainy season, as the command continues to treat the matter as a confirmed accidental death.
