A Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State, has convicted and sentenced a 30-year-old school security guard, Chidiebere Kalu, to one year in prison for sexually abusing a 10-year-old female pupil of Radiant Glory Academy, Umuichichi. The judgment, delivered on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, found Kalu guilty of two counts of indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor, following a prosecution arising from incidents reported by the child's family.
The court sentenced Kalu to one-year imprisonment without the option of a fine on the first count and one-year imprisonment with an option of a ₦200,000 fine on the second count. The court ordered both sentences to run concurrently. The case stemmed from incidents that allegedly occurred within the school premises and was pursued through the criminal justice system after the victim's family reported the matter to the authorities.
Reacting to the judgment in a statement issued on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Vivacious Development Initiative (VIDI), in collaboration with the Child Protection Network (CPN), Abia State Chapter, described the conviction as a significant victory for child protection and justice. The Executive Director of VIDI and Abia State Coordinator of the Child Protection Network, Amb. Onyinyechi Joy Nwosu, revealed that the organisation worked collaboratively with relevant bodies to provide child protection support to the survivor, monitor the investigation, and follow the case through prosecution until judgment was delivered.
The organisation said the judgment reinforces the principle that every child has the right to safety, dignity and protection, while sending a strong warning that perpetrators of child abuse can be held accountable under the law. "This judgment sends a clear message that child abuse has no place in our schools or communities and that perpetrators of offences against children can be held accountable through the justice system," Nwosu said. She commended the Nigeria Police Force, the prosecution team, the judiciary and other stakeholders for their roles in securing the conviction, and praised the courage of the child survivor and her parents for pursuing justice despite the challenges associated with the process.
The organisation noted that the outcome underscores the need to strengthen child protection laws, enforcement mechanisms and sentencing frameworks to ensure punishments for offences against children serve as effective deterrents. The VIDI boss reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to safeguarding children, stating that they would continue to work with government institutions, schools, communities and development partners to prevent violence against children, support survivors and promote safe learning environments.
The conviction of the school security guard has drawn attention to the vulnerability of children in educational institutions and the urgent need for stronger safeguards. The Abia State Government has also launched a Sexual Offenders Register to publicly identify persons convicted of sexual offences as part of efforts to deter sexual and gender-based violence in the state. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that children face in places where they should feel safest, and while the judgment has brought a measure of justice for the young victim, the long-term psychological impact of the abuse will likely remain. The Abia State Government and civil society organisations have continued to call for stronger child protection measures, including mandatory background checks for school staff, increased awareness campaigns on child sexual abuse, and the establishment of more support services for survivors. As the state steps up its efforts to combat sexual violence, the hope is that such cases will serve as a deterrent and that more perpetrators will be held accountable for their crimes.
