Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun announced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, that seven students of Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, who were abducted by gunmen on July 29, have been rescued alive in a coordinated security operation, with no ransom paid for their release. The rescue, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, followed a multi-agency operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, the Armed Forces, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes, and hunters. Governor Abiodun revealed that the operation was bolstered by aerial surveillance after he requested the deployment of a police helicopter from the Inspector-General of Police on August 3.
Five of the students were rescued during the first phase of the operation, while the remaining two were freed in a subsequent operation involving the police helicopter and ground forces. One of the rescued students sustained a gunshot injury but has been stabilised after receiving medical attention. The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, confirmed that two suspected kidnappers had been arrested and were assisting investigators, while security operatives continued to track other members of the gang. Governor Abiodun declared that there would be no hiding place for kidnappers or any other criminals in Ogun State, warning that all offenders, including collaborators, informants, and sponsors, would be identified and prosecuted.
The governor commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritising security and strengthening the operational capacity of security agencies, while also praising the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and all security personnel involved in the rescue mission. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) welcomed the rescue, describing it as a major relief for the student community and commending the governor and security agencies for the professional and intelligence-driven operation. The rescue comes just days after NANS issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Ogun State Government, demanding the immediate rescue of the abducted students and warning of statewide protests if its demands were not met.
