The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress has escalated the crisis over its governorship ticket in Ogun State, petitioning the Inspector-General of Police and the Department of State Services to demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Abayomi Hunye for allegedly parading himself as the party's candidate for the 2027 election.
In a petition dated August 24, 2026, and signed by the party's Director of Administration, Ayoola Peter Olajolo, the APC accused Hunye of taking to print and social media to falsely present himself as its governorship flagbearer for the January 2027 poll. The party described his claim as "false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilize the peace of Ogun State".
The petition, which was also sent to the DSS, revealed that Hunye was validly suspended from the APC on April 7, 2026, following a written petition from his ward in Tube Ward, Ipokia Local Government Area. The suspension was ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and formally communicated to the National Headquarters over allegations of anti-party activities, conduct injurious to the party's image, and deliberate acts aimed at causing disaffection among loyal members.
The APC reaffirmed that Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan, popularly known as Yayi, remains its duly elected governorship candidate, following a validly conducted primary election. Balogun Kudirat Abiodun is his running mate. The party noted that the submission of their credentials on the INEC portal was completed on August 7, 2026, and that acknowledgement slips have been issued.
The APC urged the police to invite Hunye for immediate questioning and to prosecute him for impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and violation of the Electoral Act, 2026. The party also sought an order to restrain him from further parading himself as a candidate to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.
The party has attached to its petition certified copies of Hunye's suspension letter, the ratification letter from the Ogun State Working Committee, and the letter communicating his suspension to the party's 2026 Screening Committee. It pledged full cooperation with law enforcement agencies during the investigation.
The development follows an earlier public disclaimer by the APC, in which its National Secretary, Senator Surajudeen Basiru, declared Hunye an impostor and warned the public, media outlets, and political stakeholders against conducting any business with him under the guise of the APC. "For the avoidance of doubt, Mr. Hunye is not a member of the APC in good standing," Basiru said.
The crisis in Ogun State is the latest in a series of internal disputes within the APC as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections. The party's decision to involve the police marks a significant escalation in its efforts to assert control over its governorship ticket and prevent factional candidates from undermining its electoral prospects.
