In a dramatic turn of events that reads like a script from a Nollywood thriller, a 55-year-old man, Idowu Alade, has regained his freedom after escaping from a kidnappers' den in the dense forests of Ose Local Government Area, Ondo State, while his abductors were fast asleep. The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the abduction, a development that has brought a sliver of hope to a community rattled by the rising tide of insecurity. The victim, who was abducted on the evening of August 21, 2026, while on a mundane errand to purchase a recharge card, managed to escape from the clutches of his captors at about 4:00 a.m. on August 23, 2026, trekking through the treacherous forest until he emerged in the Ifira area, where he was rescued by security operatives.
The harrowing ordeal began at approximately 6:00 p.m. on August 21, when Alade left his residence at Aroge Camp, via Idoani, to buy a network recharge card. When he failed to return home, members of his community grew anxious and commenced a search the following morning. The matter was subsequently reported at the Idoani Police Division, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Jimoh Abayomi, operatives of the command, in collaboration with personnel of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, popularly known as Amotekun Corps, the Ose Bravers Vigilante Group, and local hunters, launched an intensive search and bush-combing operation to locate the victim.
However, before the search party could find him, Alade had already taken matters into his own hands. He recounted how he seized the opportunity to escape while his captors were asleep. The victim, displaying remarkable courage and presence of mind, fled the hideout and trekked through the forest, navigating the perilous terrain until he reached the Ifira area. Acting on credible intelligence, security operatives located him there, rescued him, and ensured he received medical attention for injuries sustained during his captivity. "The joint security team commenced an intensive search and bush-combing operation to locate and rescue the victim," Abayomi stated.
Following Alade's escape, the police placed the axis on red alert, leading to the arrest of two suspects, Usman Shaibu, 25, and Sanni Musa, 27, by a patrol team from the Isua Division at about 2:15 p.m. on the same day. The breakthrough came after the victim, having regained sufficient strength, positively identified the two suspects during a formal identification process at the police station. In a significant development, the victim's mobile phone was recovered from the suspects, further strengthening the case against them. DSP Abayomi confirmed that the suspects allegedly confessed to the crime and provided information on other persons suspected to be involved, including an alleged accomplice reportedly based in Auchi.
The Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, has directed that the suspects and the case file be transferred to the Command's Anti-Kidnapping Squad for discreet and comprehensive investigation. This move is aimed at identifying and arresting other members of the alleged criminal network. Abayomi commended the swift response and collaboration among security agencies and local stakeholders, assuring residents that the Command remained committed to tackling kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state. He urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to aid crime prevention and detection.
