The ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance in Anambra State has recorded a clean sweep of all 21 local government chairmanship positions and all 362 councillorship seats in the local government election held on Saturday, August 29, 2026. The results were announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Mrs Genevieve Osakwe, at the commission's headquarters in Awka.

Osakwe declared all APGA candidates winners, describing the election as peaceful, free, fair and credible. She said APGA fielded candidates across all 21 local government areas, while the Young Progressives Party was the only other party to participate, fielding a chairmanship candidate only in Anambra East.

In 20 local government areas, APGA candidates ran unopposed through a "Yes or No" voting pattern. The only contested race was in Anambra East, where APGA's Ifeanyi Chinweze polled 50,169 votes to defeat the YPP candidate, who scored 1,658 votes.

Osakwe rejected reports that YPP had boycotted the election in Anambra East following alleged violence and malpractice, stating that the commission was not aware of any boycott. However, YPP candidate Sunday Nnabuife alleged that his agents and party members were barred at gunpoint from accessing polling units, with the party's spokesman in Anambra East accusing the ruling party of using the state's Agunechemba Security operative to harass and intimidate its members.

The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, commended the peaceful conduct of the elections, saying the exercise recorded no major security breaches or electoral violence. He said the development reinforced the security achievements of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's administration.

Speaking on behalf of the elected chairmen, the Chairman of Ayamelum LGA, Emmanuel Igwebuike, commended Governor Soludo, ANSIEC and security agencies for creating a conducive environment for the election. He pledged the support of the newly elected council chairmen for the governor's development agenda.

The clean sweep is the second consecutive time APGA has won all 21 chairmanship positions in Anambra's local government elections, having achieved the same feat in 2024. However, the lack of meaningful opposition participation in 20 of the 21 chairmanship contests has raised questions about voter choice and democratic competition. As one analyst noted, while APGA's 21-out-of-21 victory is an undisputed political achievement, "elections are not measured only by who wins. They are also measured by competition, participation and public confidence".
