Tragedy struck Awka, the Anambra State capital, on the evening of Sunday, August 30, 2026, when unidentified gunmen shot dead a popular comedian and media personality, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as 'Aiza Nwosu', along with an unidentified middle-aged man. The two victims were killed at separate locations in what police described as a coordinated attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, Nwosu was trailed from his residence by assailants travelling in a tinted-glass vehicle. They reportedly double-crossed his vehicle along S.M. Okeke Street in the Amaikwo area of Awka and shot him dead inside his Toyota Hilux vehicle. The attackers then drove some distance away and shot another victim dead along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, dispossessing him of his belongings before fleeing. Police recovered N7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card, and a pair of slippers from the scenes.
A source familiar with the incident told Vanguard that Nwosu had survived previous attempts on his life. He was a well-known figure in Awka, working as a comedian, master of ceremonies, disc jockey, and mobile advertiser who made public announcements using his Hilux truck fitted with loudspeakers.
Confirming the incident on Monday, August 31, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had intensified the ongoing manhunt for the perpetrators. Preliminary information revealed that three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla carried out the shootings. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the killings as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a comprehensive investigation. Police have appealed to residents with credible information about the suspects to come forward.
