The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting widespread thunderstorms, moderate to heavy rainfall, and sunny conditions across the country from Monday, August 31, to Wednesday, September 2, 2026. The agency has also warned of possible flash floods in coastal areas of the South and advised the public to take necessary precautions.
According to NiMet's weather outlook released in Abuja on Sunday, August 30, 2026, the northern region will experience sunny skies with patches of clouds on Monday. However, thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains are expected over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, and Kaduna States during the morning hours. By the afternoon or evening, similar conditions are forecast for Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba States.
For the North Central region, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are predicted over parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Later in the day, the rain is expected to spread to Kogi, Benue, and other parts of the region. The southern region will also see moderate rainfall, starting in the morning over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos, and Bayelsa States. The agency expects the rain to cover the entire southern region later in the day.
On Tuesday, September 1, morning thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba States in the North. These conditions will spread to Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba, and Adamawa later in the afternoon. In the North Central region, thunderstorms are forecast for parts of Niger, Kwara, and the FCT in the morning, with conditions expected to intensify across the region by evening. For the South, light rains are expected in the morning over parts of Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, and Rivers, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rains across the entire region later in the day.
On Wednesday, September 2, the northern region will see partly cloudy skies with chances of thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Bauchi, Jigawa, and Yobe in the morning, with moderate rains expected across the region in the afternoon and evening. The North Central region will have sunny skies in the morning, with thunderstorms and moderate rains expected later in the day. The southern region will experience cloudy conditions with light rains in the morning and thunderstorms with moderate rains by evening.
NiMet has advised the public to take safety precautions, including securing loose objects to prevent collisions caused by strong winds that may precede thunderstorms. The agency also warned of possible flash floods, particularly in coastal areas of the South, due to continuous rainfall. Motorists were urged to avoid driving or wading through floodwaters, while residents were advised to disconnect electrical appliances during storms and stay away from tall trees to avoid falling branches. Airline operators were also directed to obtain specific weather reports for effective planning of their operations.
