The political landscape in Yobe State is shifting. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received a major boost ahead of the 2027 general elections with the defection of 2,025 members from three rival political parties. The mass defection took place on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at a ceremony held in Sabon Garin Nangere, Nangere Local Government Area of the state.
The defectors were received by a member of the PDP Board of Trustees and former senatorial candidate for Yobe South, Halilu Mazagane. According to Mazagane, the 2,025 defectors comprised 500 members from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), 1,300 from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and 225 from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This influx of new members is a significant development as political parties across the country intensify efforts to strengthen their structures and attract supporters ahead of the 2027 polls.
During the reception ceremony, Mazagane urged both the new defectors and existing party members to remain focused and not be intimidated by political opponents. He encouraged them to vote for PDP candidates at all levels, promising that if elected, the party would create jobs for youths and empower women. He also called on them to conduct themselves peacefully during the electioneering period. Mazagane, who is also aspiring to represent the Potiskum/Nangere constituency in the House of Representatives, pledged to create jobs for the youth if elected into office.
This wave of defections comes at a time when the PDP is working to rebuild its influence in the North-East. The party had suffered a significant blow in July 2025 when its entire structure in Yobe State collapsed into the ADC, leaving only the acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, as the sole member of the party in the state. The recent defections could signal a shift in momentum as the 2027 elections approach.
The APC, currently in control of the Yobe State Government House, has faced similar challenges, with reports of defections to other parties and internal disagreements over the 2027 governorship ticket. While the PDP has gained ground in Nangere LGA, the political terrain in Yobe remains highly competitive, with all parties vying for control ahead of the next electoral cycle. The coming months will test whether this wave of defections translates into tangible electoral gains for the PDP, or if it remains a localized shift in a state that has been a stronghold of the ruling party.
