Residents of Oke Eletu in the Ijede Local Council Development Area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, have raised a desperate alarm over the deplorable condition of a major road in their community, questioning the reported disbursement of over N16.2 billion for the project. According to a viral social media post on Friday, September 4, 2026, the road has become a "death trap," with potholes everywhere, making commuting a terrifying experience for residents.
A social media user, whose post has since generated significant public outrage, drew attention to the shocking state of the Oke Eletu to Ijede road. The user claimed that the Lagos State Government's 2025 Q4 Budget Implementation Report indicated that over N16.2 billion had been paid for the road project. The post read: "To think that over N16.2bn was paid to this road according to Lagos state Q4 BIR is highly unbelievable‼️ This is the current state of Oke Eletu to Ijede LCDA in Lagos. The state of this road is completely terrifying. With potholes everywhere, residents cannot commute easily without fear of an accident or traffic collision."
The post, which tagged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other state officials, called on the government to provide the public with details of how the funds were used and to facilitate the road's immediate repair. The resident's cry highlights a growing frustration among Lagosians who feel that public funds meant for critical infrastructure are not yielding the desired results. The Oke Eletu–Ijede road, a vital artery connecting several communities in the Ikorodu area, has reportedly been in a state of disrepair for years, causing hardship for residents and motorists.
The Lagos State Government has not yet issued an official response to the allegations. However, checks by Stone Reporters reveal that the Lagos State Government has previously flagged off the construction of a 1.3-kilometre road in the Ayubu-Bashorun Street, Ilupeju Community, Ijede LCDA, in June 2024. Also, an 8-kilometre road linking Jimoh Idowu and Ama Avenue in the Abule Eko area of Ijede LCDA was flagged off in May 2025. These projects, however, do not appear to be the same as the Oke Eletu road, and it is unclear if the N16.2 billion figure refers to any of these projects or a different one.
The situation in Oke Eletu is not unique, as residents of the community have previously appealed to security agencies and the Lagos State Government to strengthen security in the area following alleged attacks and threats by suspected cult members. The community has also suffered a 19-month power outage, with residents begging the government and Ikeja Electric to restore electricity. The poor state of the Oke Eletu road and the alleged mismanagement of funds have added to the litany of challenges facing the community.
As the social media post continues to gain traction, the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State Public Works Corporation are under increasing pressure to provide clarity on the matter. Residents have called for transparency and accountability, insisting that money disbursed for projects must be used for the purpose intended. The government's response, or lack thereof, will be crucial in determining public trust in its infrastructure development agenda. Until then, the people of Oke Eletu and Ijede are left to navigate a road that has become a symbol of neglect and a constant threat to their safety.
