The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies in separate incidents recorded in the Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja, prompting an appeal for public assistance in identifying the mothers or other family members. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, September 4, 2026, confirming that both incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The first rescue took place around Obodo Street in Kurudu. At about 5:30 p.m., a resident, Mr Innocent, heard the cry of a baby and upon inspection discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in a carton box. He immediately reported the incident at the Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45 p.m. Police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside officers from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, were promptly dispatched to the scene. The baby boy was found and rescued, taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment, and is currently in stable condition. The command has concluded all necessary documentation and handed over the baby to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
In a similar incident later that night, at about 9:40 p.m., a resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Mr Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate. Upon inspection, he discovered a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises. Ibrahim, alongside other concerned members of the community, immediately rescued the child and reported the matter at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m. The baby girl was promptly taken to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital by the JWC Department for medical examination and is currently receiving care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department.
The FCT Police Command commended Mr Innocent, Mr Ibrahim, and other concerned members of the community for their prompt intervention, describing their actions as important in ensuring the babies were rescued and brought to the attention of the police. The command has appealed to members of the public with any information that may assist in identifying the mothers or other family members of the abandoned babies to come forward and report to the nearest police station. Efforts are being intensified to unravel the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
