The meeting was supposed to be routine. It was a Saturday gathering of Peoples Democratic Party members in Agbani, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, one of the periodic ward meetings that keep the party’s grassroots machinery running. Instead, it became the latest flashpoint in a disturbing pattern of political violence that is casting a long shadow over Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 general elections. According to accounts from party members and local sources, thugs stormed the venue on September 12, 2026, firing gunshots into the air and vandalising properties worth millions of naira. Party members who spoke with SaharaReporters said the attack had heightened concerns over the safety of opposition members and their ability to freely organise political activities in the state.
The details of the attack are as troubling as its timing. The thugs reportedly arrived at the venue in two Sienna vehicles and about ten motorcycles. Some of the occupants were reportedly wearing Nkanu West Local Government security vests, a detail that has raised serious questions about the possible involvement of personnel linked to the local government’s Neighbourhood Watch security outfit. Gunshots were fired during the incident, damaging canopies, chairs, tables, and other vital materials at the meeting venue, causing panic among party members and residents in the area. Local community leaders confirmed that properties worth millions belonging to Hon. Nnaji Sunday Odogwu, the Minority Leader of the Nkanu West Legislative Council, were destroyed. Odogwu, who was preparing for the meeting, reportedly escaped with his life.
The attack in Agbani is not an isolated incident. It is the latest in a series of attacks and disruptions targeting PDP meetings in parts of Enugu State. Stakeholders said a similar incident occurred on August 29 during a PDP meeting in Obe Ward, Nkanu West LGA. According to them, party members were allegedly assaulted, intimidated and brutalised, while private properties worth millions of naira were vandalised and destroyed during the attack. They also recalled that on August 16, a PDP ward meeting in Akpugo Ward 3 was violently disrupted. Party members at that meeting were allegedly subjected to physical assault, harassment and intimidation while participating in the party’s activities. The repeated incidents in Agbani, Obe Ward and Akpugo Ward 3 have raised concerns among PDP members, who fear that the attacks may represent a sustained pattern of disruption rather than isolated incidents. The party stakeholders alleged that the violence and destruction of property have occurred while members were attempting to conduct legitimate meetings and political activities.
The response from the PDP leadership has been firm but measured. Chief Uche Nnaji, the party’s governorship candidate, and Chief Dr. Kingsley Chizoba Nweke, the PDP senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District, expressed solidarity with the affected party members. Nnaji assured party members that those behind the incident would be identified and, if found culpable, brought to justice. The PDP leaders stressed that political disagreements should not be allowed to degenerate into violence, intimidation, or threats against citizens participating in lawful political activities. They maintained that elections should be contested on the basis of ideas, competence, service delivery, and the confidence of the electorate rather than fear or intimidation. The PDP urged political actors and their supporters to uphold peace and democratic values, stressing that every citizen should be able to attend political meetings, support candidates, and participate in the electoral process without fear.
The allegations of possible involvement of personnel linked to the Nkanu West Neighbourhood Watch Security are particularly serious. There are also allegations that some individuals associated with opposing political interests may have been connected to the incident. The reported incident has prompted calls for relevant security authorities to investigate what happened, identify those responsible, and ensure the protection of political gatherings across the state. As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether the police or other security agencies had commenced investigations into the latest incident or arrested any suspects.
The violence in Enugu is part of a broader escalation of political tensions across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 elections. In Edo State, thugs reportedly stormed the PDP secretariat and destroyed properties worth millions. In Ebonyi State, journalists narrowly escaped being burnt alive when suspected thugs attacked a PDP defection event. In Kwara State, an APC women leader escaped a lynching attempt after suspected PDP supporters stormed an empowerment programme. The pattern is unmistakable: political violence is on the rise, and the institutions meant to prevent it are either unable or unwilling to act. The PDP in the South-East has demanded a level playing field for all parties in Ebonyi and Enugu states, urging the state governments to create an enabling political environment ahead of the 2027 election.
For the people of Agbani, Obe Ward and Akpugo Ward 3, the attacks are not abstract political events. They are attacks on their right to participate in the democratic process without fear. The PDP has called for an investigation, but investigations are only meaningful if they lead to accountability. If the perpetrators of these attacks are not identified, arrested and prosecuted, the violence will continue, and the 2027 elections will be held under a cloud of intimidation and fear. The people of Enugu State deserve better. They deserve to attend political meetings without the threat of gunshots, to support candidates of their choice without fear of reprisal, and to participate in the electoral process as equal citizens in a democracy. The attack on the PDP meeting in Agbani is a test of whether the Nigerian state can protect those rights. So far, the state is failing.
