“He Broke His Word Twice” — Ronaldo Finally Explains Why He Walked Out on Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has given his full account of the events that led him to walk out on the Portugal national team camp last week, accusing head coach Jorge Jesus of breaking his word on two separate occasions and declaring that he left because he could no longer trust the man who had persuaded him to continue his international career.

In a lengthy personal statement released on X on Tuesday, the 41-year-old captain said he wanted to recount, in the first person and directly, the circumstances surrounding the last training camp of the national team. He revealed that after the 2026 World Cup, he had prepared a farewell letter to the Portuguese people, intending to retire from international football. The president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença, urged him to continue, and Ronaldo backed Jesus as the new coach. “I told the President of the Federation that, in my opinion, it would be the right choice,” he wrote. “That is why, on the day the current head coach was presented, I was genuinely happy with the choice. It was the right option, as the results are confirming”.

Ronaldo said Jesus later met him and outlined a plan for his participation. “He told me he was counting on me and that my presence was fundamental to his project. He presented me, right there, with a plan for my participation. He told me I would play the first match and the last one, and that for reasons of physical management he would always make three to four changes per match”. An early suggestion that Ronaldo skip the trips to Norway and Denmark was rejected outright. “I refused this proposal immediately. It seemed obvious to me that I could not accept it. It was not because I would not play the matches abroad that I would stop captaining our team. That privilege of staying in Portugal would not be a good example”.

Ronaldo played against Wales, was substituted, and handed the armband to Bruno Fernandes without complaint. On the day of the Norway match, however, the plan changed. “To my absolute surprise, the coach asked me if I was fit to play 30 minutes. I was fully focused on my physical recovery. Without any problem. This request was something outside my physical recovery and training plan — because I was only going to play on the 4th at the Dragão — but of course I said yes. He replied that I should then be ready because I would play 30 minutes”. What followed became the first breach. “The rest everyone knows. I warmed up from half-time, watched the minutes go by, and was not called. The coach had broken his word to me”. Ronaldo apologised for not greeting the fans after the game, calling it “a failure that is only my responsibility”.

A later private meeting with Jesus and Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho produced what Ronaldo described as an agreement: Jesus would publicly clarify the situation in the next press conference. A short list of points was prepared and validated. The actual conference, Ronaldo claimed, did not match what had been agreed. “It was the second time that he was breaking the word he had given me. I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word. For me, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people”. He added that in a conversation with the FPF president and the coach on the morning of that press conference, he had reaffirmed that if they did not want him there, they should tell him. “I accept, for better or worse, what they propose that I do. I respect the decision, and when they break their word to me, I feel that my place is not there”.

Ronaldo apologised to his teammates and to the Portuguese public. “I owe an apology to my national team teammates for having left the camp. Despite the absolute breach of trust in the coach’s word, as those who witnessed these conversations can attest, I should not have done it. The responsibility is exclusively mine”. He also apologised to the Portuguese people, saying “the breaking of one’s word has, for me, a defining impact. I felt that, from that point on, my remaining would only harm the working group, and I did what I have always said I would do if I did not feel useful: I packed my bags and left”. He accepted that the federation should punish the walkout without mitigating factors. “I understand that the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player; I am team captain, and that constitutes an aggravating factor. I have already apologised, but I know that attitudes must have consequences”.

On his future, Ronaldo was unambiguous. He rejected the idea of purely ceremonial farewell matches. “When I think about the national team, what I really think about is competing. Therefore, if I am physically well, playing at my club, scoring goals I hope, after serving the suspension that is applied to me, I will be available, as I always have been until today, to compete and win for our National Team”. He described this as “the purest of truths” and made clear he is not retiring from international football despite the fallout.

The statement brings an end to days of speculation that followed Ronaldo’s abrupt departure from camp on September 30, hours after Jesus publicly stated that the forward would not start against Denmark. At the time, Ronaldo promised that “in time, I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave”. That explanation has now arrived, and it places the blame squarely on the coach. Jesus has not yet responded to Ronaldo’s account. Portugal’s next Nations League fixtures are against Denmark and Wales, and the federation must now decide on the appropriate sanction for its captain, a player who remains the most decorated and recognisable figure in the history of Portuguese football. For Ronaldo, the message is clear: he left because he was lied to, he accepts the consequences, and he intends to return. As he put it, the truth is still the most important thing in relationships between people.
