A commercial driver has been killed after armed men reportedly ambushed his vehicle along the Anyiin-Ayilamo road in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 5, 2026, as the driver, identified as Igba Agenewe, was returning to Makurdi from Anyiin.
According to a report by Vanguard, Agenewe was driving a Sharon bus when armed men reportedly emerged from the bush after the vehicle passed Akwana and opened fire.
The driver was hit and died at the scene.
Three soldiers who were travelling in the vehicle were also reportedly abducted during the attack. They later regained their freedom and returned to Anyiin, according to a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers who spoke to the newspaper.
Agenewe was said to be a member of the NURTW Wurukum branch, Anyiin section, and operated from Wurukum Park in Makurdi.
A fellow union member, Iorember Tser, said Agenewe had earlier been warned against travelling through the Ayilamo axis because of security concerns in the area.
Tser said some drivers in Anyiin had advised the deceased not to return to Makurdi through the route, but Agenewe reportedly insisted because he had recently passed through the same road.
He subsequently picked up three passengers said to be military personnel and began the journey towards Makurdi.
The attack reportedly occurred after the vehicle passed Akwana while heading towards Ayilamo.
The killing has reportedly thrown Agenewe's colleagues and members of the transport union into mourning.
The owner of the Sharon bus, Aondona Tyulen, described the incident as unfortunate and appealed to security agencies to intensify operations in the area and apprehend those responsible.
The latest incident has also renewed concerns over the safety of motorists and commuters using the Abinsi-Tyulen-Anyiin-Wukari road, particularly the Ayilamo axis, which has experienced repeated security challenges.
Benue has witnessed a series of attacks in the Logo axis in recent months. In September, two policemen were confirmed killed in an ambush near Ayilamo while escorting the Divisional Police Officer of the area back from Makurdi.
As of the time of Vanguard's report, the remains of Agenewe had been deposited at the Ayilamo mortuary.
Efforts to obtain the reaction of the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, with the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Peter Aondongu, reportedly not responding to enquiries on the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the identities and motives of the assailants, remain subject to investigation.
