A man has been accused of allegedly taking a purse containing two mobile phones, several ATM cards and other valuables during the service of songs held in honour of late Nollywood actor Chijioke Temidayo Nwokafor, popularly known as Cjay Nwoks, in Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at a branch of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) in Gbagada, where family members, friends and colleagues gathered to pay their respects to the late actor.

According to an account circulating alongside descriptions of CCTV footage, the suspect was allegedly seen sitting near the purse, which reportedly belonged to a person identified as Rexking, while attendees exchanged pleasantries during the gathering.

The footage reportedly showed the man taking the purse before blending into the crowd. He was subsequently alleged to have moved to a corner and transferred the item into a purple nylon bag.

The account further alleged that the man returned to the area and remained seated as attendees continued interacting, while other personal belongings, including mobile phones, were reportedly placed nearby.

The alleged theft came to light when attendees began searching for the missing purse. The CCTV footage was subsequently reviewed, leading to allegations against the man seen in the recording.

A public appeal has since been made for information that could help establish the suspect’s identity and whereabouts. However, the suspect’s identity and the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently established, and it remains unclear whether a formal police complaint has been made or an official wanted notice issued.

Cjay Nwoks, whose full name was Chijioke Temidayo Nwokafor, died on September 30, 2026. His service of songs brought together relatives, friends and colleagues from the entertainment industry to honour his memory.

The allegation has raised concerns about the security of personal belongings at crowded social and public gatherings.

Anyone with relevant information about the reported incident should provide it to the appropriate law enforcement authorities rather than confront or publicly accuse a suspected individual without verification.
