The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service has urged residents to strengthen fire-safety measures as the dry season sets in, following the recording of 1,324 emergency incidents across the state between January and September 2026.

The figures were contained in the agency’s Third Quarter Activity Report released on Thursday, October 8, 2026, and disclosed by its Senior Public Affairs Officer, Maria Fadairo.

According to the report, fire emergencies accounted for 1,135 of the incidents. The service also handled 79 rescue calls, 100 salvage operations, nine building-collapse incidents and one gas-related explosion during the nine-month period.

The agency said 210 victims were rescued alive, while 65 suspected fatalities were recovered during emergency operations.

The report further revealed that the service recorded 341 false emergency calls, warning that such calls could delay firefighters from responding to genuine emergencies and put lives and property at risk.

On property protection, the agency estimated that property worth ₦79.44 billion was saved during the period, while losses were put at ₦13.24 billion. The total estimated value of property affected stood at ₦92.68 billion.

The Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Abimbola Adeseye, called on residents, businesses and institutions to take proactive steps to prevent fire outbreaks, particularly as the dry season begins.

She advised residents to avoid indiscriminate burning, handle and store flammable materials properly, switch off and unplug electrical appliances when not in use, and avoid overloading electrical sockets.

Adeseye also urged households and business owners to maintain functional fire extinguishers and keep escape routes and access points clear to facilitate evacuation and enable emergency responders to reach affected locations promptly.

The service encouraged residents to report emergencies without delay and cooperate with firefighters at incident scenes, stressing that fire prevention and public awareness remain essential to protecting lives and property across Lagos State.
