A woman and her 14-year-old daughter have died after a three-storey building under construction collapsed onto their home in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The victims were identified as Mrs Happiness Ugoagu and her daughter, Confidence, both indigenes of Uga in Aguata Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Anata Anaba, near Anabanaba, Okpoko.

According to reports, the building collapsed onto a neighbouring bungalow where the mother and daughter were sleeping. Other people were reportedly trapped in the debris but were rescued by emergency responders and taken to hospital.

Residents said they had previously raised concerns about the construction, alleging that the land was waterlogged and unsuitable for a three-storey building. They claimed an engineer initially recommended limiting the structure to two floors because of the ground conditions, but the advice was allegedly ignored.

The woman’s son, identified as Chimobi, said he was outside when the building collapsed, while his mother and sister were inside their apartment.

Confirming the incident, Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Chijioke Ojukwu, described the collapse as unfortunate. He said the structure was unauthorised and that authorities had previously issued a stop-work notice.

Ojukwu attributed the collapse to alleged negligence and the use of substandard building materials. He said the state government had ordered the building’s demolition and was investigating other unapproved structures in the area.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about building safety, compliance with approved construction plans and the enforcement of development regulations in Anambra State.
