The Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Nura Umar Abdullahi, has reportedly said that more than 200 people remained in the hands of bandits after he escaped from captivity.
The reported revelation, made during an interview with DW Hausa, has renewed concerns over the fate of people still being held by armed groups in Zamfara and the efforts to secure their release.
Abdullahi was abducted on July 25, 2026, when armed men attacked his residence in Bungudu town. The attack also claimed the lives of security personnel attached to his residence.
On September 24, troops of the Joint Task Force North-West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, confirmed that the chairman and four other abductees had escaped captivity and were received by troops in the Kaura Namoda area of the state. The victims were subsequently taken to a military medical facility for treatment and evaluation.
The chairman’s reported account raises fresh questions about the number of people still held by bandits, their condition and the prospects of their safe return to their families.
However, the figure of more than 200 people could not be independently verified from the available reports at the time of publication. Further details from the interview, including the circumstances surrounding the other captives and any ongoing efforts to secure their release, remain unclear.
