The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has rearrested an 83-year-old woman, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, in Abia State over alleged drug trafficking, barely a year after she was convicted of drug-related offences.

The woman was arrested on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area, with quantities of methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabinoid, allegedly concealed around her waist with a wrapper.

The NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Sunday, October 11.

According to the agency, her rearrest followed intelligence suggesting that she was operating a drug joint allegedly frequented by criminal elements accused of terrorising the community.

Babafemi said the woman was previously arrested on May 17, 2025, alongside her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, at the same residence.

During that operation, operatives reportedly recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol.

The agency said both women pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, with the option of paying a โ‚ฆ200,000 fine each. They paid the fines and were released.

The NDLEA alleged that the older woman subsequently returned to the illicit drug trade and established a drug joint at her residence.

In a separate operation at the Port Harcourt International Airport in Rivers State, NDLEA operatives working with the Nigeria Customs Service arrested a South African woman, Gebashe Sithandiwe Jessie, with 32.74 kilogrammes of cannabis, described as Thai Loud, concealed in two travelling bags.

The agency said the suspect had travelled from Thailand through Doha aboard a Qatar Airways flight and was allegedly expanding her trafficking route to Port Harcourt when she was arrested.

Meanwhile, NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos intercepted 354,000 tablets of tapentadol weighing 307.20 kilogrammes in a shipment from Pakistan.

In another operation at the Lagos airport, officers seized 75.90 kilogrammes of Colorado concealed in six Ghana-Must-Go bags in a shipment from the United Kingdom.

The NDLEA said investigations and enforcement operations were continuing as it intensified efforts to curb drug trafficking and distribution across the country.
