The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed more than 25 buildings, including a Mobil filling station, along Ago Palace Way in Okota, Lagos, over alleged environmental and regulatory violations.
The enforcement operation took place on Sunday, October 11, 2026, as the authority moved to clear accumulated refuse from road medians and areas around bridge abutments where indiscriminate dumping had become a recurring problem.
LAWMA’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, led the operation, which involved compactor trucks, a payloader, tipper trucks and street sweepers deployed to evacuate waste and restore environmental order along the affected corridor.
According to the authority, some of the sealed premises had illegal stalls erected on road setbacks or accommodated street traders whose activities allegedly contributed to littering and improper waste disposal.
The exercise also involved public sensitisation, with LAWMA officials urging residents and traders to dispose of refuse through approved waste collection channels rather than dumping it on roads and medians.
During the operation, some cart pushers were arrested over alleged illegal waste disposal. One of them, identified as Shamusi Muritala, reportedly admitted that he collected up to ₦5,000 from customers to dispose of refuse on road medians.
Muritala, who identified himself as being from Katsina State, reportedly appealed for leniency during questioning.
Gbadegesin warned that the authority would continue enforcing environmental regulations against illegal street trading and those who patronise traders operating in prohibited locations.
He said such activities obstruct movement, undermine public order and contribute to environmental degradation.
Operatives of the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Unit, popularly known as the Taskforce, and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) team supported the enforcement exercise.
LAWMA said it would sustain waste evacuation, enforcement and public education efforts to curb indiscriminate dumping, protect public infrastructure and improve sanitation across Lagos.
