The Interim National Chair of the Labour Party (LP), and former Minister of Finance, has declared that the party is on course to not only repeat but surpass its 2023 electoral performance in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Monday during the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) virtual people’s parliament, the LP leader said the party’s impressive 2023 showing was a “clear message that Nigerians are hungry for change.”
The LP chair accused some politicians of working with external forces to destabilise the party despite a series of favourable court rulings.
“Our internal reorganisation was disrupted by an avoidable crisis when a former national chairman, whose tenure had expired, tried to reclaim office. But the Supreme Court on April 4, 2025, affirmed my leadership,” she said.
She alleged that the attacks against the LP are part of a wider scheme to weaken opposition parties across Nigeria.
Unveiling the party’s restructuring plan, the LP chair announced a comprehensive membership registration and revalidation drive, targeting 10 million new members nationwide.
She added that the National Executive Council (NEC) has approved a calendar of ward, local government, and state congresses, culminating in a national convention to elect a substantive leadership team before the end of 2025.
“The Labour Party will not be a mere stepping stone for opportunists, but a home for patriots committed to service and transformation,” she said.
Reflecting on the party’s rapid growth in 2023, she admitted that inexperience led to some candidates being fielded without thorough vetting. She pledged tighter screening measures to ensure only committed, value-driven members represent the party in future elections.
The interim chair also made a passionate call to Nigerian youths to move beyond being observers and play active roles in shaping the party’s future.
“Yes, we have faced setbacks. But the Labour Party is resilient, and we are already turning the tide. With the reforms being implemented, we are poised not only to replicate but to surpass the successes of 2023,” she declared.
