In a decisive move to maintain order and discipline, the Benue State House of Assembly on Friday, August 22, 2025, approved the suspension of four members from legislative duties for three months following allegations of conspiracy and attempts to disrupt proceedings.
The suspension targets Hon. Alfred Aondoaver Emberga (Makurdi North Constituency), Hon. Shimawua Emmanuel (Vandeikya 2 Constituency), Hon. Cyril Ikong (Oju 2 Constituency), and Hon. Abu Umoru (Apa Constituency). The action follows claims that the lawmakers attempted to mobilize others to cause chaos in the House just days after a vote of confidence was passed in support of the House leadership and the Governor of the State.
The motion, titled H.M. 17: "Motion to suspend Hon. Alfred Aondoaver Emberga and three others from legislative duties for attempt to cause chaos in the House", was moved by Hon. Saater Tiseer, the Majority Leader. During deliberations, other lawmakers including Hon. Elias Audu (Gwer East Constituency) and Majority Chief Whip, Hon. Peter Bemdoo Ipusu (Katsina-Ala West Constituency) condemned the actions of the affected members and supported the suspension.
The Honourable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, ruled a three-month suspension for the four members. In addition, the House dissolved its standing committee and implemented leadership adjustments:
-
Elias Audu appointed as Spokesman of the House
-
Dougulas Ackya elevated to Chief Whip
-
Kennedy Angbo appointed as Deputy Minority Leader
The House also screened and confirmed four commissioner nominees out of nine: Dr. Ortese Yanmar, Dr. Fredrick Ikyaan, Orpin Manasseh Alumo, and Michael Oglegbe, strengthening the State’s executive team.
The decisive action by the Benue State House of Assembly demonstrates the leadership’s commitment to upholding discipline, ensuring peaceful legislative processes, and protecting the integrity of governance in the state. By taking swift action against attempts to cause disruption, the Assembly sets a precedent for accountability and responsible conduct among lawmakers.
