Leaders, brothers, and sisters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have been urged to prioritize unity and strategic planning ahead of the party’s National Convention, a gathering described as crucial for charting the future of Nigeria’s leading opposition party. In a statement, Deputy National Chairman (North) of the PDP, Amb. Umar Iliya Damagum, emphasized the significance of the convention, noting that the elected National Officers will play a pivotal role in steering the party into upcoming general elections and beyond.
Amb. Damagum highlighted the evolving nature of political challenges facing the PDP, cautioning that factions seeking to divide the party have not yet gained substantial traction. “We know that politics is dynamic, and the ruling class may seek to capitalize on or even sponsor such distractions to weaken the PDP, which remains the only dominant opposition party in our dear country, Nigeria,” he stated.
Reflecting on his own journey within the party, Amb. Damagum recalled that he did not contest for the position of National Chairman, but was elected Deputy National Chairman (North). He has since been entrusted, first in an acting capacity and now substantively, with chairing the affairs of the PDP for nearly two years.
“The responsibilities bestowed upon me underscore the importance of this committee’s work. Our focus must remain on strengthening the party, consolidating our achievements, and ensuring that the PDP remains a credible alternative for Nigerians,” he said.
Amb. Damagum’s remarks come at a critical time as the PDP seeks to consolidate its leadership structure, reaffirm party discipline, and present a united front ahead of future electoral contests.
