Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, have outlined key conditions ahead of the party’s forthcoming National Convention, insisting that the National Chairman position remain in the North-Central zone, consistent with the zoning arrangement established at the 2021 convention.
The leaders, meeting in Abuja on Monday under the banner of Eminent Leaders and Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP, also called for the conduct of fresh congresses in the South-East, as well as in Ebonyi, Anambra, and local government congresses in Ekiti State. They further demanded that the outcome of the South-South Congress held in Calabar on February 22, 2025, which has been recognized by the courts, be upheld.
In a communique read by former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, the leaders warned that any National Convention conducted without adherence to these resolutions would be considered invalid, disenfranchising legitimate party members.
Among those in attendance were FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, PDP National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, former governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, Ayo Fayose, and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, House of Representatives Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly Martins Ameawhule, as well as serving and former National Assembly members, North-Central and South-South PDP National Vice Chairmen Abdulrahman Mohammed and Dan Orbih, and state PDP chairmen from Abia, Benue, FCT, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers States.
The communique emphasized the party’s commitment to equity, justice, inclusivity, and adherence to the rule of law, underscoring that a credible convention must be anchored in transparency, fairness, and inclusivity. The leaders called for the urgent conduct of fresh, legitimate congresses in Ebonyi and Anambra States, a new South-East Zonal Congress, respect for the South-South Congress outcome, and immediate conduct of the Ekiti State Local Government Areas Congress, in compliance with existing court judgments.
The statement reaffirmed that the PDP stands at a critical juncture, where its ability to resolve internal disputes and respect judicial pronouncements will determine its relevance as the nation’s leading opposition party.
