The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly opposed the proposed salary review for Nigeria’s political office holders, describing it as “tone-deaf” and “an affront to struggling Nigerians.”
The proposed review by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) would see the President, Vice President, governors, and other top officials receive significant pay increases. This development comes at a time when millions of Nigerians are grappling with high inflation, rising fuel prices, and a minimum wage that many workers still find inadequate.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC acknowledged RMAFC’s constitutional role in reviewing salaries but argued that considering such a proposal now highlights the government’s disconnect from the reality of citizens.
“The ADC strongly condemns the plan by the RMAFC to increase the salaries of political office holders. Proposing such review at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with soaring food inflation, high cost of fuel, and unpaid or inadequate minimum wage would indicate a total disregard for the people,” the statement read.
The ADC criticized attempts by RMAFC to justify the increases, pointing out that office holders already benefit from “bogus and opaque allowances, perks, and discretionary funds” that far exceed their official salaries.
For perspective, the statement highlighted that while the minimum wage stands at ₦70,000, its value has been eroded by inflation, and most Nigerians receive no additional benefits to cushion the economic hardship.
“This proposed plan to increase the salaries of public office holders is not only tone-deaf, it is an all-out affront to the Nigerian people. It signals that the government is clearly disconnected from the struggles of ordinary citizens,” the party maintained.
The ADC demanded that the proposal be suspended immediately, stressing that government must instead prioritize raising the minimum wage, ensuring timely payment of civil servants’ salaries, and strengthening social welfare programs.
“Government has no moral right to demand sacrifice from ordinary citizens while they focus on making life easier for themselves. Political office holders cannot be insulated from economic hardships while everyday Nigerians suffer,” Abdullahi added.
The party concluded that rather than enriching political elites, Nigeria’s focus should be on building policies that support vulnerable citizens and improve the overall standard of living.
