The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, in partnership with the National Defence College (NDC), Abuja, convened a Strategic Youth Leadership Conference on 27 August 2025 with the theme: “Youth and Leadership: Building a Foundation for Sustainable Strategic Leadership.”

The conference brought together youth leaders and activists from all 36 states of the federation to sharpen their leadership skills and prepare for future roles in governance and nation-building.

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by Prof. Usman Tar, Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, praised the organisers for what he described as a timely and strategic intervention. He noted that the theme resonates with his administration’s commitment to building a strong foundation for youth empowerment in Borno State.

“Through initiatives like this, youth will continue to be equipped to contribute effectively towards national development and future strategic leadership roles,” Zulum said. “These efforts will cascade to sub-nationals and Local Government levels, ultimately building better societies.”

Highlighting Borno’s youth development agenda, the Governor pointed to the 25-Year Development Plan and 10-Year Strategic Transformation Initiative, stressing that youth inclusivity remains a key pillar. With the support of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Poverty Alleviation, headed by Comrade Sainna Buba, Borno has launched multiple programmes to develop entrepreneurial skills, civic responsibility, and leadership capacity among young people.

He further emphasized that Borno youths are already actively engaged in governance, security volunteering, farming, sports, business, and public service. “We shall continue to deliberately and aggressively carry the youth in our governance and development programming,” Zulum affirmed. “Any society that ignores the youth, does so at its peril.”

The Borno State delegation to the Abuja conference included Prof. Usman Tar, Comrade Sainna Buba, and 10 outstanding youth representatives from student unions, youth forums, advocacy groups, and professional bodies.

During the programme, participants will take part in masterclasses on leadership, strategic mapping, critical thinking, and problem-solving, while also networking with peers from across the country to promote national integration and constructive engagement.

The conference reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to invest in youth as the strategic reserve of Nigeria’s future leadership and development.
