Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has charged the newly inaugurated Governing Council of Kashim Ibrahim University to promote cutting-edge research, innovation, and community-focused initiatives to address challenges and opportunities in the post-insurgency recovery era.

The directive came on Monday during the inauguration of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, along with members of the University’s Governing Council at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri. Governor Zulum emphasized that the move is part of a broader strategy to position the University as a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and moral integrity, not just for the North-East but for Nigeria as a whole.

Highlighting the remarkable growth of the student population from 300 to approximately 10,000 over the past six years, Governor Zulum urged the Council to prioritize the welfare of staff and students while upholding academic excellence, transparency, and prudent management of resources. “You are now the legal custodians of this university’s destiny, entrusted with a sacred mandate to provide strategic direction, ensure financial prudence, uphold the highest standards of academic excellence and safeguard the welfare of both staff and students,” he stated.

Governor Zulum further underscored his administration’s investments in education, including the construction of 139 new mega schools, rehabilitation of existing institutions, recruitment of thousands of teachers, and establishment of six centres of excellence. He also noted efforts to redirect youth energies from political thuggery toward scholarly and vocational pursuits.

Citing Section 1(1)(c) of the Third Schedule of the Kashim Ibrahim University Law, 2018 (as amended), the Governor reminded the Council of its mandate as the supreme governing body responsible for the policy, finances, and administration of the University. He congratulated the Chairman and members for their integrity, experience, and commitment to advancing education and community development, particularly praising Dr. Indimi’s philanthropy and longstanding support for education.

Responding, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi expressed gratitude for the appointment, pledging to work with his team to bring positive change and ensure the University meets its developmental and educational objectives.
