Nigeria has taken another bold step in its fight against climate change and environmental degradation. The Minister of Environment, Hon. Balarabe Abbas Lawal, has commissioned the newly optimized System House at Vitapur in Lagos — a facility designed to produce ozone-friendly polyol chemicals for rigid polyurethane (PU) foam.

The innovation marks a major milestone in Nigeria’s commitment to phasing out ozone-depleting substances while also aligning with the goals of the Montreal Protocol. The PU foam produced at the facility will be used in refrigeration, air-conditioning, and building insulation — key sectors where energy efficiency and environmental sustainability are urgently needed.

According to the Minister, the initiative will not only protect the ozone layer but also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and drive Nigeria closer to a low-carbon future.

The project, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and industry partners, is expected to transform Nigeria’s foam and refrigeration industry. By embracing sustainable manufacturing, promoting technology transfer, and enhancing capacity building, the facility will help position Nigeria as a leader in eco-friendly industrial innovation across Africa.

“This is not just an environmental project, it is an economic and social one,” the Minister noted, emphasizing that the facility would create jobs, strengthen local industries, and safeguard public health by promoting cleaner production practices.
