
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, FNSE, held a strategic meeting with officials of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Abuja on Wednesday, aimed at reinforcing collaboration on water supply initiatives across Nigeria.
The ICRC delegation was led by Doris El Doueihy, Head of Delegation in Nigeria and Accredited Representative to ECOWAS, and included Deputy Head of Delegation James Matthew, Urban Water Project Manager Johnson Kwangwan, and Engr. Nafiu Kasim of the National Urban Water Sector Reform Projects.
During the audience, discussions centered on accelerating access to clean water in underserved areas, with particular emphasis on Maiduguri in Borno State, a region grappling with the challenges of prolonged humanitarian crises. Both parties explored opportunities for joint interventions, technical support, and sustainable solutions to enhance water infrastructure and sanitation services.
Minister Utsev, alongside key officials from the Ministry, including Permanent Secretary Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, Directors Mukaila Segun Babarinde, Engr. Adeyinka Adenopo, and Chuks Mbaike, emphasized the importance of leveraging partnerships with organizations like the ICRC to ensure reliable water delivery and improved public health outcomes.
The meeting underscored the Ministry’s commitment to expanding potable water access nationwide, enhancing urban water management, and collaborating with humanitarian partners to address critical water challenges in high-need regions.
