President Bola Tinubu has summoned Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), the immediate past sole administrator of Rivers State, to the Presidential Villa in Abuja. Ibas arrived at Aso Villa around 5:50 pm in brown traditional attire, accompanied by Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukayede.
Earlier in the day, Minister Edun entered the villa briefly before returning with a file in hand, signaling the seriousness of the engagement.
Ibas served as the sole administrator of the oil-rich state for six months, leaving office on September 17 following the conclusion of emergency rule. President Tinubu had directed the suspended Rivers State Governor, Sir Sim Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly to resume office.
The Rivers State House of Assembly, chaired by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, resolved to investigate the state’s expenditure during the six months of emergency rule. The probe seeks to understand spending from the consolidated revenue fund, including contracts and other expenditures. Ibas, however, had previously rejected calls for such a review.
Reports indicate that Rivers State received at least N254.37 billion from the Federation Account Allocation Committee between March and August 2025 during Ibas’ tenure as sole administrator. The unfolding meeting at Aso Villa is expected to shed light on the administration’s handling of state finances during this period.
The development comes amid public scrutiny of Ibas’ tenure, with observers noting the controversial circumstances under which he assumed office. Critics have called for a detailed account of the use of state funds and decisions taken during the six-month emergency rule.
