Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed New York after successfully representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During his participation, Shettima earned praise from UN Secretary-General António Guterres for Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. He also highlighted Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition potential to global investors and strengthened strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom on trade, defence, and migration.

Delivering President Tinubu’s national statement, the Vice President emphasized the need for UN reforms and Africa’s control over its $700 billion mineral resources, while advocating for digital inclusion to create opportunities for the continent’s youth. He further engaged with the Gates Foundation to advance healthcare and education initiatives and positioned Nigeria as a central hub for the African Continental Free Trade Area, a market valued at $3.4 trillion.

Shettima was seen off at John F. Kennedy International Airport by cabinet ministers and officials from Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the UN, and he will continue to Germany for further engagements before returning home.

The Vice President’s performance has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. Many praised his diplomatic efforts, viewing them as a strong assertion of Nigeria’s role on the global stage and an opportunity to attract investment and partnerships that could benefit the country’s economy. Others, however, expressed cautious optimism, noting that while international engagements are important, the government must also ensure that these opportunities translate into tangible improvements in citizens’ daily lives, especially in areas such as security, governance, and public services. Analysts remarked that Shettima’s advocacy at UNGA underscores Nigeria’s potential in global diplomacy, but emphasized that sustained domestic reforms and follow-through are critical to reinforcing public confidence.
