The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has strongly condemned the directive by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) instructing its members to cut crude oil and gas supplies to the refinery. In a statement released on Saturday, September 27, the refinery described the action as “criminal, reckless, and an act of economic sabotage,” warning that it could trigger fresh fuel shortages and significant revenue losses for the government.
According to the refinery, the PENGASSAN directive, issued on September 26 to multiple branches including TotalEnergies E&P, Seplat Producing Nigeria, Renaissance, Chevron, Oando, Shell Nigeria Gas, and NGIC, threatens to disrupt production and nationwide supply of critical petroleum products such as petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene, and cooking gas.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery emphasized that such industrial action, if carried out, would have severe economic implications for the country and undermine efforts to ensure energy stability. The statement was titled “PENGASSAN AND ITS LAWLESS DIRECTIVE” and characterized the union’s instructions as a direct attack on national interests.
PENGASSAN, in an earlier statement signed by General Secretary Lumumba Okugbawa, accused the company of violating labor laws by allegedly dismissing workers who voluntarily registered as union members.
Industry analysts warned that a prolonged halt in supplies could worsen fuel scarcity, increase inflationary pressures, and negatively affect transportation and manufacturing sectors. Commuters and motorists in Lagos and other major cities expressed concern, saying that any disruption in fuel supply could lead to longer queues, higher prices, and strain on daily economic activities.
The standoff underscores rising tensions between management and labor in Nigeria’s critical energy sector, highlighting the need for dialogue to avert disruptions that could impact millions of citizens nationwide.
