Troops of the Nigerian Army have recorded a significant operational success in Bauchi State following a coordinated raid on suspected bandit hideouts in the Kumbodoro Forest, where several camps linked to a notorious criminal leader identified as Azuge were destroyed.
The operation, carried out by soldiers of the 33 Artillery Brigade under Operation WUTAN DAJI, forms part of ongoing military efforts to curb banditry and kidnapping across parts of northern Nigeria. According to military sources, the raid was executed after credible intelligence indicated the presence of armed groups operating from the forest and using it as a base for attacks on nearby communities.
During the offensive, troops engaged the bandits in a firefight, overpowering them and dismantling their operational structures within the forest. Several of the camps were reportedly set ablaze to prevent reoccupation, while a number of the assailants were neutralized in the encounter. The military did not disclose the exact number of casualties among the armed groups but confirmed that the operation significantly disrupted their activities in the area.
A key outcome of the raid was the rescue of eight individuals who had been held captive by the group. The victims, believed to have been abducted from surrounding communities in previous attacks, were freed during the clearance operation and have since been handed over to appropriate authorities for medical evaluation and reunification with their families.
In addition to the rescue, troops recovered a cache of weapons believed to have been used by the bandits to carry out attacks. While details of the recovered arms were not fully disclosed, military officials stated that the seizures would aid ongoing intelligence gathering and further operations targeting criminal networks in the region.
The operation also extended to Duguri, another area within Bauchi State, where troops intercepted and recovered 36 rustled cattle believed to have been stolen by the bandits. Livestock theft has remained a major component of banditry operations in northern Nigeria, often serving as a source of funding for criminal groups.
Security analysts note that the success of the operation highlights the importance of intelligence-driven military actions in addressing the evolving tactics of armed groups, who frequently relocate their bases to remote forested areas to evade detection. The destruction of camps such as those in Kumbodoro Forest is seen as a strategic move to deny bandits safe havens and disrupt their logistics.
Operation WUTAN DAJI, under which the raid was conducted, is one of several military initiatives aimed at tackling insecurity in the North-West and parts of the North-Central region. The operation has focused on coordinated ground and air offensives, surveillance, and collaboration with local communities to identify and neutralize threats.
Residents in affected areas have long expressed concern over the activities of armed groups, including kidnapping for ransom, cattle rustling, and attacks on villages. The military’s latest success is expected to provide a measure of relief, although authorities have cautioned that sustained efforts will be required to fully restore security.
Military officials reiterated their commitment to maintaining pressure on criminal elements and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and accurate information that could assist ongoing operations. They also emphasized that the armed forces would not relent in their mandate to protect lives and property across the country.
The development comes amid broader national efforts to address security challenges, with the federal government consistently emphasizing the need for a multi-faceted approach that includes military action, intelligence sharing, and community engagement.
While the destruction of the camps and the rescue of victims mark a notable achievement, observers stress that long-term stability will depend on sustained operations and the ability to prevent regrouping by displaced bandit factions. For now, the successful raid in Bauchi stands as a significant step in the ongoing campaign against armed criminal networks in the region.
