IGP MEETS SENATOR ABDUL-AZEEZ YARADUA ON ELECTORAL REFORM BILL FOR EARLY VOTING BY POLICE OFFICERS

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, today welcomed Senator Abdul-Azeez Yaradua to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, for a high-level consultation on the proposed Electoral Reform Bill, which seeks to introduce early voting rights for police officers and security personnel deployed for election duties.

This significant dialogue focused on aligning the draft legislation with the operational demands of election security while maintaining electoral integrity.

Senator Yaradua was accompanied by key stakeholders, including:

Mr. Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa.

Cynthia Mbamalu, Director of Programmes at Yiaga Africa.

The team presented the draft bill for the IGP’s review and institutional input to ensure it serves both democratic and security objectives effectively.

Mr. Itodo commended the Nigeria Police Force for its enhanced performance in recent off-cycle elections in Edo and Ondo States, stating:

“The IGP’s strategic leadership has greatly improved electoral security, contributing to peaceful and credible polls.”

He also highlighted the IGP’s national and international recognitions as signs of trust in his reform-oriented approach to policing.

Responding, IGP Egbetokun, joined by Deputy Inspectors-General of Police, expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts of Senator Yaradua and civil society actors like Yiaga Africa:

 “We are fully committed to a more inclusive and credible electoral process. The Nigeria Police Force will continue to support initiatives that promote fair, transparent, and secure elections,” the IGP stated.

The proposed Electoral Reform Bill represents a progressive step toward empowering frontline security operatives to exercise their civic rights without compromising election security logistics.
