NDLEA Arrests Notorious Kingpin in Delta, Intercepts ₦7.8 Billion Opioids in Rivers, Destroys Over 48,000kg Skunk Nationwide

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has recorded major breakthroughs across multiple states, arresting a notorious drug kingpin, intercepting opioids worth ₦7.8 billion, and destroying vast cannabis farms in ongoing nationwide operations.

Kingpin Falls After Three-Year Manhunt

After three years on the run, 36-year-old Sunday Ibigide, a notorious trafficker, was arrested by NDLEA operatives in Asaba, Delta State, on Sunday, August 10, 2025. He was caught attempting to move 250 blocks of skunk weighing 138kg with a distribution bus. His aide, Clement Osuya (27), was also arrested.

Ibigide had been declared wanted since March 2022, when 24.137kg of skunk and 10 grams of molly linked to him were seized before he went underground.

Massive Drug Destruction and Raids Nationwide

  • Enugu State: NDLEA, backed by the military and vigilantes, destroyed 37,500kg of skunk on 15 hectares of farmland in Enugu Ezike, arresting six suspects. An additional 74.5kg was recovered for prosecution.

  • Taraba State: Operatives, aided by local security groups, destroyed 11,250kg of skunk on 4.5 hectares of farmland in Sardauna LGA.

  • Edo State: Raids in Etsako West and Owan West LGAs yielded 562kg of skunk in bush and warehouse seizures.

  • Kano State: Along the Zaria–Kano highway, suspects were arrested with 92kg of skunk, while 4,320 ampoules of ketamine injection were seized at Gbaji checkpoint, Badagry-Lagos highway.

Major Interceptions Across States

  • Rivers State (Onne Port): NDLEA, in joint operations with Customs, recovered 875,000 bottles of codeine syrup (₦6.1bn) and 3.5m pills of trodol benzhexol (₦1.7bn) from five containers at the West Africa Container Terminal.

  • Lagos State: A woman, Muyibat Mumuni (52), and her son Faruk Mumuni (25), were arrested with 149kg of Ghana Loud in Mushin, while another suspect was caught with 8.5kg of Canadian Loud in Lekki.

  • Kogi & Gombe States: NDLEA seized 465,800 capsules of tramadol from suspects, including a commercial bus driver on the Okene–Lokoja highway.

  • Kaduna State: Officers arrested four suspects linked to 22,640 pills of tramadol/rohypnol and 111.1kg skunk along the Zaria–Kano road.

NDLEA Expands War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) Advocacy

Beyond arrests and seizures, the NDLEA continued its WADA sensitization programs across Nigeria, visiting schools, workplaces, worship centers, and royal palaces. Notable figures engaged included:

  • Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (Minna, Niger State)

  • Emir of Borgu, HRH Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro IV (Niger State)

  • Emir of Lafia, Hon. Justice Sidi Bage Mohammed (Rtd) (Nasarawa State)

  • Shehu of Borno, HRH Dr. Abubakar Umar Ibn Garbai Elkanemi (Maiduguri)

NDLEA Chairman Commends Operatives

The NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the diligence of operatives in Rivers, Lagos, Delta, Enugu, Taraba, Gombe, Kogi, Kano, Edo, and Seme. He urged officers nationwide to sustain the “balanced approach” of enforcement and drug abuse prevention.
