The Akwa Ibom State Government has launched an investigation into the reported death of a young mother and her baby following a caesarean delivery at the General Hospital in Ikot Ekpene.
Governor Umo Eno, who expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, has directed the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, to set up a high-powered panel made up of medical and legal experts to uncover the circumstances behind the tragedy. The commission is also expected to recommend measures that will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
In compliance with the Governor’s directive, Dr. John led a delegation from the Ministry of Health to the hospital shortly after midnight to carry out a preliminary inquiry and gather firsthand accounts from stakeholders.
The State Government reiterated its commitment to protecting the lives of mothers and children, noting that maternal health has been declared a top priority under Governor Eno’s administration. In recent months, the state has invested heavily in hospital facilities, workforce expansion, and emergency health systems to reduce maternal and child mortality.
Authorities assured the public that the findings of the probe will be handled with transparency, adding that any confirmed cases of negligence will attract disciplinary action in line with existing regulations.
The government appealed for calm, urging residents to allow the inquiry to run its course while reaffirming that the health and safety of every Akwa Ibom citizen remains its top priority.
