Lagos Strengthens Community HIV Response Through Data-Driven Capacity Building

The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to transparency, accountability, and sustainable outcomes in community-based HIV initiatives.

At a two-day capacity-building workshop hosted at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), emphasized the critical role of grassroots participation, continuous evaluation, and evidence-based interventions in improving HIV outcomes.

The training focused on enhancing the capacity of organisations in data collection, management, and reporting using standardised national tools. Participants were also trained in quality assurance and the routine use of data to inform decision-making at all levels.

“Our responsibility is not just to implement projects but to measure the real impact on communities. We must ensure that our interventions translate into meaningful, lasting change,” Dr. Animashaun said, highlighting the importance of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL) frameworks.

She further commended the collaboration between government agencies, civil society, development partners, and local communities, stressing that data-driven interventions are key to consolidating gains and achieving long-term sustainability in the fight against HIV and AIDS.

“One of the most important aspects of this training is not just numbers, but the lives behind them — the reduction of stigma, the empowerment of communities, and the improvement of health outcomes,” Dr. Animashaun added.

The workshop also featured facilitators such as Miss Bunmi Solomon, who encouraged participants to embrace self-assessment, institutional strengthening, and community ownership as central pillars of an effective HIV response.

The programme underscores LSACA’s ongoing efforts to ensure that HIV interventions in Lagos State are efficient, accountable, and impactful, moving the state closer to an HIV-free generation.
