Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Solomon Ehigiator Arase has passed away at the age of 69. He died on Saturday, August 31, 2025, at Cedarcrest Hospital in Abuja after a brief illness.
Arase, born on 21 June 1956 in Edo State, was Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police, appointed in April 2015 by then-President Goodluck Jonathan. He retired from the Force in June 2016 after a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.
A highly respected officer and reformist, Arase introduced initiatives such as the Intelligence Response Team, Complaint Response Unit, and Safer Highway Patrols during his tenure as IGP. He was later appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC) in January 2023, serving until June 2024.
Arase’s service history was marked by significant contributions at home and abroad. He served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, led the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, and was part of Nigeria’s contingent to the United Nations Mission in Namibia. Between 2002 and 2008, he also worked as Principal Staff Officer to three successive Inspectors-General of Police.
Beyond policing, Arase was deeply invested in education and youth empowerment. Through the Solomon Ehigiator Arase Foundation (SEAF), he awarded scholarships to dozens of young Nigerians, with 29 beneficiaries supported in 2025 alone.
He held multiple academic qualifications, including degrees in Political Science, Law, and Strategic Studies, alongside advanced training at the National Defence College. In recognition of his service, he received national honours including the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) and the Nigeria Police Medal (NPM).
Tributes have poured in for the late Arase, remembered as a reform-minded leader who championed police welfare, professionalism, and institutional reforms.
