Amnesty International Demands Probe Into Lynching of Niger State Food Vendor Over Alleged Blasphemy

Human rights watchdog Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to urgently launch a transparent investigation into the killing of a female food vendor, identified as Ammaye, who was lynched by a mob in Kasuwan Garba village, Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State.

The incident occurred on Friday, 29 August 2025, after an altercation between Ammaye and a young man reportedly escalated into accusations of blasphemy. The mob, overpowering security personnel on the scene, brutally killed her on the spot.

Amnesty International described the act as a “deplorable” violation of human rights, stressing that the failure of authorities to curb mob violence has emboldened perpetrators of such atrocities. The organization further emphasized that community and religious leaders must support efforts to end the recurring cycle of mob justice in the country.

“The lynching of Ammaye following an exchange with a young man is deplorable, and authorities must ensure those responsible for her death are immediately arrested and brought to justice. That a mob overpowered security personnel and instantly lynched her shows utter disregard for the sanctity of life and due process,” the group stated.

The rights group also urged the Nigerian government to end the culture of impunity, ensure that all suspects are brought before the law, and demonstrate its commitment to safeguarding the lives and rights of citizens.

This tragic killing has once again raised concerns about the rising cases of mob violence in Nigeria, particularly in northern communities, where allegations of blasphemy have often triggered deadly attacks.
